Evaporation Source Material Selection

Pellet, granule, piece, slug and wire are source forms—not interchangeable descriptions. The evaporation method and source hardware should guide the requested form.

Start with the deposition source

Identify thermal resistance, boat, crucible or electron-beam evaporation. Include the crucible or pocket size and any handling limits.

Define form and charge

Specify the preferred form, individual size range and total mass. Where an exact pellet size is not essential, a process-compatible particle range can improve availability.

  • Pellet diameter × length
  • Granule or piece size range
  • Wire diameter
  • Total charge mass
  • Packaging unit

Material quality

State minimum purity and any critical impurity limits. For optical compounds, identify the coating application and wavelength region so an appropriate grade can be evaluated.

Process compatibility

Some compounds can change stoichiometry, release gas or require specific source preparation during heating. Process parameters should be developed by the coating operator and material behaviour evaluated for the actual source.
